Celtic Crosses:
 For a long time, the Celtic Cross has been the most recognized symbol of Celtic Christianity, representing in its many stone faces a long tradition of Celtic art and design, as well as the change from an ancient Pagan tradition to an era of Christian conversion and practices.

But no one is certain of where the distinctive circle of the Celtic cross came from or what it means. To some ancient peoples, a circle was used to represent the moon, and a circle with a cross symbolized the sun. Therefore, the circle in the Celtic cross could have been a pagan moon or sun that was appropriated by early Christians to help convert the Celtic population.

An Irish legend tells how St. Patrick created the first Celtic cross by drawing a circle over a Latin cross to incorporate a pagan moon goddess symbol. For an Irish Catholic, the circle in the Celtic cross could be a symbol of eternity and the endlessness of God's love. It may even represent a halo emanating from Christ.

      Engraving on Crosses  
      Many ask about engraving on crosses. This particular cross is XR102 from this page, and is a flat cross. Most gold crosses are not flat across the back, and are therefore not suitable for engraving on the back. Additionally, the manufacturer will often put a makers mark on the back side of the cross. Hollow crosses are solid gold but hollow in the middle and therefore not suitable for engraving. Very detailed crosses and crucifixes will most likely have detailed backs as well.
